On Leading Without Authority
Tom Attwood · 23 August 2026 · 1 min read
Most people wait for the title before they start leading. That's backwards.
Influence precedes authority in every meaningful career. The title, if it comes, simply formalises what others have already acknowledged.
Leading without authority means: showing up prepared when others don't, asking the clarifying question in the meeting, following through when it's inconvenient, and genuinely caring about outcomes beyond your job description.
Nobody gives you permission to do any of those things. That's the point.
